My daughters are amazing, yet every time I ask them what they are learning in school, their typical response is, “nothing!” After I threaten to take away their phone, the book of answers opens! I strongly encourage you to find time to ask specific questions about your child’s school day. If they are like my daughters, it will be very typical to hear, “nothing,” when you ask what they did in school today. Trust me, there are no days when that answer would be the reality! Teachers have established routines with students, assessments of learning have been completed, and weekly classroom letters should be sent to you. If you continue to dig a little deeper with your students, hopefully the answers change from “nothing" to a couple of exciting projects completed or what they did in Math, Music, Spanish etc. ____________________________ Bullying Prevention Month: October is Bullying Prevention Month. Every year, Saint John’s highlights this serious issue with our families and students with videos, presentations, and pictures; this year will be no different. On Wednesday, October 20, we encourage all students to WEAR and SHARE ORANGE, to come together in one giant message uniting our nation for kindness, acceptance and inclusion, to visibly show that we believe no child should ever experience bullying. As always, we embrace the journey of school together as a team. Together we make a positive difference! In order to stop bullying, we need to help others realize how to not take part in it. Giving the bully a consequence is only a part of the solution. The victim will need support, and the bully will need some education to accompany the consequence. Parents, school staff, and other caring adults have a role to play in preventing bullying. We can do the following: (taken from www.stopbullying.gov)
Help kids understand bullying. Talk about what bullying is and how to stand up to it safely. Tell kids bullying is unacceptable. Make sure kids know how to get help.
Keep the lines of communication open. Check in with kids often. Listen to them. Know their friends, ask about school, and understand their concerns.
Encourage kids to do what they love. Special activities, interests, and hobbies can boost confidence, help kids make friends, and protect them from bullying behavior.
___________________________ ATHLETICS NEWS It's not too early for all students to express interest in our winter sports: basketball (girls & boys), hockey & swimming. Students CAN be in multiple sports, but we need enough interest to support a team. Sign up today. Swimming is open to all kids able to swim 25 yards without assistance in grades K-8 (try-outs likely in younger kids). Register interest here: https://school.sjolc.org/information-calendar
We are in need of basketball coaches, so please reach out to Athletics Director Laura Haraldson: lharaldson@sjolc.org if you are interested or have any questions! ____________________________ Dads: Men's Club Wants to Treat You to Oktoberfest & A Free Dress Pass Saint John's Men's Club is a parish organization committed to service to the community and to the school, particularly in the areas of athletics and Scouts.
