As our pandemic protocols shift to a more "normal" status this school year, we want to get ahead of the game on volunteering and how more parishioners can get involved. We anticipate having a variety of options that include one-up hours here and there, as well as regularly scheduled opportunities.
RECESS DUTY We have need forregular recess volunteers, and there are even paid options available! We ask for a weekly commitment throughout the school year, same day of the week each week, and we have four openings: 11:15 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. Monday through Friday. This is a perfect opportunity for a stay-at-home mom or dad, folks still working remotely during the pandemic or active retirees who are not snowbirds. Earn up to $20/hour, or unlimited graces for service, whichever you prefer. Contact principal Dan Hurley directly if you are interested: dhurley@sjolc.org.
ANNUAL EVENT COMMITTEES We humbly and gratefully rely on the efforts of volunteer committees to successfully run our larger annual events each year, including our Marathon, Santa's Workshop and Gala. Committees made up of functional chairpeople (think: decor, solicitation, food & drink) meet regularly (monthly, then more frequently closer to each event). If you have a specific talent to share, or simply enjoy being a part of the fun events, contact Gretchen Hopeman: ghopeman@sjolc.org.
ONE-UP VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES We know every family's situation is different, and sometimes committees or regular hours are hard commitments to make. Have no fear, we still want you here! Your individual classroom ambassador and/or teacher likely will have needs that you can fill more sporadically. Often teachers welcome professional presentations that pertain to your day-to-day work (i.e. a nurse giving a presentation on healthy habits, an engineer stopping in to one of our STEM classes, etc.). We also are excited to bring back field trips, which often require parental help. Then there are smaller "boots on the ground" efforts that help make our school events go, helping kids speak at Masses, serving food or drink at an open house, helping at the Used Uniform Sale, or many others.
The first step for all of our volunteering opportunities is to ensure you are registered and up-to-date on your Safe Environment training, a prerequisite for all adults who work with kids in our Catholic School System here in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. Please contact Laura Haraldson (lharaldson@sjolc.org) to check your status and/or get the process started. Important: You will not be able to volunteer, even on a field trip, until you have completed the requisite online training, put forth by VIRTUS and McDowell Agency.
